Description

Interesting Facts:
Pumice is a volcanic ash which is formed when lava is permeated with gas bubbles during the solidification process. Because lava has similar properties and chemical make-up as glass, pumice is very abrasive but unlike glass, it is very soft. Pumice is the softest abrasive media in use today. All Natural.

Directions
Add to base, amount as desired. Smaller amounts will provide color variations in products. Larger amounts will provide a full scrub. When using in soaps & washes, we recommend the suspension bases which prevent additives from sinking to the bottom of the container.

Pumice in Polishing and Abrasive Applications

A number of factors contribute to pumice being widely used for polishing and cleansing applications in industry and consumer products—abundance, neutral in pH, chemically benign, hard enough to abrade yet soft enough not damage the surface—but pumice’s characteristic friability is where it really shines, meaning that pumice can be ground down to an ultrafine powder and still retain is abrasive quality.

Formed from violent volcanic activity, lightweight, frothy pumice is similar to glass in physical and chemical makeup, but unlike glass, pumice is a much softer abrasive—fine-ground pumice is the softest abrasive media you can use and ideal for applications where the quality of the finished surface is paramount.
Industrial Abrasive Applications Using Pumice

When it comes to grit, Pumice is the undisputed champion of the industrial abrasive industry. Nothing else works in so many manufacturing applications. Hess can crush and process pumice to any spec, including the microfine powers needed for the lightest of polishing applications. We provide over 300 spec grades…one for almost any need. On the off chance we don’t already have what you need, we’ll work with you produce a pumice abrasive to your exact specs.

Hess knows pumice, and we know the needs of the polishing and abrasives industry. Once we’ve helped you determine the ideal spec for your application, we combine that expertise with state-of-the-art lab and processing equipment to insure the spec is maintained throughout the entire process—insuring consistency from batch to batch.
SOME COMMON USES FOR PUMICE IN INDUSTRIAL APPLICATIONS

•Polishing Media. Pumice powder is used for cleaning and polishing circuit boards and preparing other sensitive electronic components.

Television glass and other critical grinding and polishing applications use carefully graded pumice.

Pumice is used by dental professionals to clean teeth and restore gleam. Pumice is also used in the finishing of dentures.

Pumice makes an excellent tumbling media for precision parts finishing such as buttons and other highly-polished delicate items and parts.

•Cleansing Media. The softer, gentler abrasion of pumice is replacing the harsh, destructive bite of sand in sensitive high-pressure blasting applications, such as the restorative cleaning of grime and neglect from historic buildings and other constructs.

•Textile softening and conditioning. The popular process of stone-washing has successfully relied on pumice to get the job done. Light, carefully sized and rounded pumice stones and specially-designed washing machines combine to soften and condition the appearance of stiff denims and other fabrics, imparting that worn-in and comfortable look and feel.
Critical, Ultra-pure Applications

A fine abrasive powder used on a rinsed article (without drying) after pickling, to create a clean and suitable surface on which to solder. NB. Care should be taken to wash away all powder particles before soldering – any residue will prevent solder from running. Also used in polishing enamel work before the final firing (again used with water).

Hess refines a low heavy-mineral pumice, with impurity concentrations of less than 0.3 percent, an enhancement of quality vital for purposes of precision grinding, such as for television glass.
Pumice in Consumer Products

Fine pumice powder has been used to add gentle abrasive cleaning power to hand soaps for many years. Pumice powder is now found in a variety of ex foliating and cleaning products—shower and body gels, heavy duty hand cleansers, facial and foot scrubs, and household cleansers for kitchen and bath surfaces.
SOME COMMON ABRASIVE APPLICATIONS FOR PUMICE IN CONSUMER PRODUCTS

•Ex foliating Scrubs and Cleansers. Pumice is a proven replacement for plastic micro beads in cosmetics and personal care products. [MORE]

•Scouring Stones and Sticks. Pumice sticks in various shapes and sizes are formed, pressed and marketed to consumers and industry to clean tough stains on hard surfaces such as bathroom fixtures, ovens, grills, cast iron cookware, concrete surfaces, tools, and the like. Paint, rust, scale, mineral deposits, and grease are no match for the gentle bite of pumice.

•Rubbing Compounds. Pumice-based polishes and rubbing compounds gently remove scratches and waxy build-up, restoring a gleaming shine to painted and polished surfaces.
